Job Description: Legal Advisor in Child Protection

A Legal Advisor in Child Protection offers legal expertise and support to RRAA, government agencies, or NGOs engaged in safeguarding children’s rights and welfare. The role involves providing guidance on child protection laws, welfare policies, abuse investigations, and ensuring adherence to both national and international standards protecting children.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal Counsel & Guidance:

  • Offer expert legal advice on matters related to child protection laws, such as child abuse, neglect, custody, adoption, foster care, and juvenile justice.
  • Advise agencies, governments, or NGOs on legal risks, responsibilities, and strategies to uphold children’s rights.
  • Provide legal guidance to ensure child welfare practices prioritize children’s best interests and comply with laws.

Policy Development & Advocacy:

  • Contribute to developing child protection policies and protocols in line with legal standards, including international conventions like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
  • Advocate for legislative improvements to enhance child protection systems.
  • Support organizations in aligning strategies with updated legal frameworks.

Child Protection Legislation & Compliance:

  • Stay updated on changes in child protection laws and treaties, advising on necessary adjustments.
  • Ensure practices and intervention strategies comply with laws and ethical guidelines.
  • Oversee the implementation of legal standards for child safety and privacy, including data protection.

Legal Representation & Advocacy:

  • Represent organizations in legal proceedings, including court cases, hearings, and negotiations.
  • Collaborate with social workers and legal teams to advocate for children’s rights in custody and abuse cases.
  • Provide support in complex cases, including child trafficking and international adoptions.

Case Review & Litigation Support:

  • Offer legal advice on child protection cases and assist in legal proceedings.
  • Review case files and legal documents for compliance.
  • Prepare legal documentation and strategies for hearings or investigations.

Training & Education:

  • Train staff and stakeholders on legal requirements and best practices in child protection.
  • Educate organizations about maintaining legal documentation in child protection cases.
  • Lead workshops on child rights and effective legal responses.

Collaboration with External Legal Authorities:

  • Coordinate with governmental bodies, law enforcement, and other entities to address child protection issues.
  • Support multi-agency initiatives and negotiations related to child welfare.
  • Assist in cases of child exploitation and abuse investigations.

Research & Legal Advice:

  • Conduct research on emerging laws and policies to ensure compliance with current frameworks.
  • Provide legal opinions on sensitive topics like parental rights and reporting requirements.
  • Advise on best practices in child protection law from various jurisdictions.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in law, preferably with a focus on family law, child protection law, or human rights law.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in child protection, family law, or children’s rights advocacy.
  • Background in litigation, child welfare, or legal advocacy is essential.

Skills:

  • Expertise in child protection laws and related frameworks (e.g., UNCRC).
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and advocate effectively for children.
