Job Overview: GIS Assistant

Primary Responsibilities:
The GIS Assistant will perform the following tasks to ensure project success:

GIS Integration & Tool Development:

  • Utilize GIS tools for creating and analyzing data collection mechanisms.
  • Develop and administer digital surveys using the Kobo Toolbox platform.
  • Generate GIS tools and maps for monitoring and evaluation under the SESEHA project.

Geospatial Data Management and Advocacy:

  • Conduct geospatial analysis for systematic assessments.
  • Maintain geographic databases, including satellite imagery and other relevant data.
  • Align the SESEHA Information Management System (SIMS) with UNDP data standards.
  • Create products for scenario development, contingency planning, and risk analysis.

Project Support and Data Facilitation:

  • Record project site coordinates and store them in a GIS database.
  • Connect GPS data to project images for easy implementation tracking.
  • Produce maps and infographics for reporting and presentations.

Power BI Dashboard Development:

  • Design interactive dashboards for data visualization and decision-making.
  • Assist partners in setting up platforms to display GIS data, including GeoSmart.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Undertake additional duties as required to ensure efficient office operations.

Institutional Arrangement:
The GIS Assistant will report to the SESEHA Project Manager at the UNDP Afghanistan Country Office in Kabul, collaborating with the GIS and SESEHA project teams to support SIMS implementation.

Qualifications:

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma with five years of relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree with two years of relevant experience in GIS or related fields.

Experience:

  • Strong background in GIS visualization, data collection, and geospatial analysis.
  • Familiarity with Afghanistan’s geography, data sets, and statistics.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English, Dari, and/or Pashto is essential.

Additional Skills:

  • Prior experience with the UN or similar organizations is advantageous.
