Job Description:
Job Purpose:
This full-time, grant-funded position is for a Nutrition Nurse in Faryab province. The role involves screening all children under 5 years old, as well as pregnant and lactating women. The nurse will implement the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) guidelines, develop a nutrition education schedule, and follow up on cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), and malnourished Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs).
Key Responsibilities:
- Screen all children under 5 years old and pregnant or lactating women.
- Provide Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) psychosocial counseling to affected PLWs.
- Conduct health education sessions on physical conditions that may resemble depressive disorders (e.g., anemia, malnutrition).
- Offer psychosocial support to malnourished women and those with malnourished children, including running self-help groups and teaching stress management.
- Ensure sustainable breastfeeding counseling practices are in place.
- Attend project-related training and replicate it for Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Family Health Action groups.
- Follow the latest Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and nutrition cluster guidelines for adapted nutrition interventions.
- Create a comprehensive registration system for the nutrition unit (OPD SAM).
- Accurately measure and record MUAC, weight, height, and length according to nutrition criteria.
- Provide nutrition counseling based on MoPH and nutrition cluster guidelines.
- Calculate and distribute RUTF/RUSF and other medical supplies (e.g., Vitamin A, Mebendazole) to malnourished children, with weekly and biweekly distributions for SAM and MAM cases.
- Follow up on malnourished children who do not attend the center through CHWs.
- Complete and submit IMAM reports monthly to World Vision and file information on psychosocial support sessions.
- Ensure proper documentation and inventory of supplies, and report any needs.
- Fully implement the IMAM guidelines in all activities.
- Monitor stock levels, prepare consumption reports, and request new supplies as needed.
- Maintain all equipment in working order and report any issues.
HMIS and Reporting:
- Register cases daily based on the approved MoPH format.
- Submit hard copies of the Monthly Immunization and Acutely Malnourished Report (MIAR) to the Health sector department focal point.
Other:
- Adhere to World Vision’s Child and Adult Safeguarding policies and standards.
- Follow World Vision’s accountability standards.
- Be prepared to implement World Vision Afghanistan’s Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs plan for 2024.
Job Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Required Education, Training, and Certification:
- At least one year of experience in a nutrition program using CMAM/IMAM approaches.
- Graduation from a nursing or midwifery program.
- Required Professional Experience:
- Experience in working with malnutrition cases and using triage methods.
- Strong communication skills and familiarity with local communities.
- Proficiency in Dari and Pashto (preferred).
- Flexibility to work and travel within the designated area.
Position Requirements:
- 100% field-based role, providing primary health care services as part of a mobile health team in targeted districts of Faryab province.
- Knowledge of Dari is essential, and knowledge of Pashto is preferred.
- Strong midwifery skills, knowledge of child protection and gender issues, and good communication skills are highly valued.
