About Us

The Aga Khan University Academic Projects, Afghanistan (AKU-APA) is an extension of the Aga Khan University (AKU), an international institution with campuses and academic programs in eight countries across three continents. Since 2002, AKU-APA has been supporting capacity building in Afghanistan's national academic institutions through various AKU entities. Its initiatives include:  

-Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences (GIHS), Kabul: Supporting nursing and midwifery education at GIHS and its regional institutions.  

- Kabul Medical University: Assisting with the baccalaureate nursing program and postgraduate medical education (PGME).  

- Ministry of Public Health: Contributing to programs such as Mental Health and Drug Dependency Resistance, human resource development, and teacher training.  

- French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC), Kabul: Providing support for its PGME program.  

- Research Initiatives: Managing research projects, including those on maternal and child health and stunting prevention in Badakhshan.  

- Scholarships: Offering scholarships for Afghan students to pursue undergraduate and master’s degrees in Nursing, Medicine, and Education at AKU Karachi.  

AKU is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of international development agencies focused on areas like rural development, education, health, culture, microfinance, and private sector growth. AKDN aims to alleviate poverty and promote economic development to enhance living standards.  

In Afghanistan, AKDN has been actively involved in reconstruction efforts since 1997 through its various agencies:  

- Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS, A): Implementing health programs.  

- AKU-APA and Aga Khan Foundation (AKF, A): Delivering health education and other development initiatives.
