Job Description

Position Overview:
The Legal Advisor for Child Protection offers legal expertise to organizations such as RRAA, government entities, or NGOs dedicated to safeguarding children’s rights and welfare. This role focuses on legal counsel related to child protection laws, policy creation, abuse investigations, and ensuring compliance with both national and international child protection standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal Advice and Support:

  • Provide expert counsel on child protection laws, including those on abuse, neglect, custody, adoption, foster care, and juvenile justice.
  • Advise organizations on legal strategies and risks related to protecting children’s rights.
  • Ensure child welfare practices comply with legal standards and prioritize the child’s best interests.

Policy Development and Advocacy:

  • Assist in drafting and revising child protection policies in alignment with legal frameworks like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
  • Advocate for legal reforms to strengthen child protection laws and welfare systems.
  • Align organizational strategies with evolving legal requirements.

Legislation Monitoring and Compliance:

  • Track changes in child protection laws and ensure organizational compliance.
  • Implement legal standards for child safety, privacy, and data protection in child welfare records.
  • Support adherence to ethical guidelines in reporting and intervention strategies.

Legal Representation and Advocacy:

  • Represent organizations in legal proceedings related to child protection, such as abuse or custody cases.
  • Collaborate with social workers and law enforcement to advocate for children in court or negotiations.
  • Support complex cases involving child trafficking, sexual abuse, or international adoption.

Case Management and Litigation Support:

  • Review child protection case files to ensure legal compliance.
  • Provide strategic guidance and prepare documentation for hearings or investigations.

Training and Capacity Building:

  • Conduct training for stakeholders (e.g., social workers, educators, law enforcement) on child protection laws and best practices.
  • Lead workshops on child rights, legal frameworks, and effective child protection responses.

Collaboration with Legal Authorities:

  • Partner with courts, law enforcement, and other agencies to address child protection issues.
  • Assist in multi-agency child protection initiatives and settlement discussions.

Research and Legal Expertise:

  • Stay updated on child protection laws, policies, and global best practices.
  • Provide legal insights on sensitive issues, such as parental rights or international child protection cases.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Law, with a preference for specialization in family law, child protection law, or human rights law.

Experience:

  • Proven expertise in child protection, family law, or advocacy within children’s rights organizations.
  • Litigation or experience in child welfare is an advantage.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of child protection laws and frameworks (e.g., UNCRC).
  • Excellent research, analytical, and advocacy skills.
  • Strong communication abilities, including legal drafting and reporting.
  • Effective collaboration in multidisciplinary environments.
