Project Overview
In this project, UNOPS will act as a “verifying agency,” responsible for reviewing, verifying, and resolving pending claims between the relevant De-facto Authority (DFA) ministries or agencies and contractors, consultants, and suppliers—both local and international—concerning works and services completed before 15 August 2021 under externally funded projects in Afghanistan. This task involves verifying various contract types, including civil works, goods, services provided by consultancy firms, and individual consultants, mainly within the infrastructure sectors across the country. The verification process will also include examining other project-related costs incurred before 15 August 2021.
UNOPS will provide the project's financier with a detailed overview of unresolved claims, clarify the pending payment amounts with supporting documents, and offer recommendations on the amounts to be paid to each contractor, consultant, supplier, or project-affected individual.
The key stakeholders for this project include the financier, relevant staff from Afghanistan’s De-facto Authority ministries, contractors, consultants, and suppliers.
Job-Specific Information
UNOPS is seeking an intern to assist with financial verification tasks related to the claims for payments under the described project. The intern will report to the Project Management Support Specialist - Finance and assist with the following key responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in reviewing documentation related to claims to determine eligibility for the claimed amounts.
- Help in organizing and analyzing data for financial reviews of claims and pending payments.
- Assist with verifying amounts to be settled against advance accounts managed by EAs/IAs.
- Organize information and documents received from various sources during the verification process.
- Assist in performing calculations, such as interest on late payments, liquidated damages, force majeure costs, and taxes.
- Help prepare internal and external reports and presentations on claims and progress updates.
- Assist in organizing meetings with functional teams, such as sector teams, legal, contracts management, and external entities.
- Follow up on pending information requests with contractors, consultants, suppliers, EAs/IAs, and donors.
- Help with data entry and uploading documents to the management information system.
