There are a total of eight (8) positions available, with one position assigned to each duty station: Bamyan, Gardez, Herat, Jalalabad, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Mazar-e-Sharif.
The appointed individual will operate under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative (FAOR) in Afghanistan. Reporting directly to the Head of the Regional Office, they will be responsible for day-to-day supervision, with technical guidance provided by the Team Leader of the Water Resource and Irrigation Team. Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Team Leader of the Water Resource and Irrigation Team.
The Regional Agroforestry and Watershed Assistant will offer pertinent technical support to ensure the effective implementation of Water and Resilience Services.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Coordinate all agroforestry and watershed implementation activities and crop water management among team members at the regional level.
Lead the selection team, conducting selection and verification of agroforestry and watershed sites, and related demonstration areas.
Assess the performance of selected sites and prepare need assessment/diagnostic reports for planned agroforestry, crop water, and watershed sites.
Evaluate water distribution systems, measure discharge (using flumes, current meters, etc.), calculate water loss, assess water use efficiency, and analyze crop water productivity at the farm level and in selected watershed sites.
Gather climatic data (rainfall, humidity, wind speed, sunshine hours, etc.) from various stations in regions for technical design requirements.
Analyze agro-meteorological and hydrological data for selected watershed sites and OFWM irrigation schemes.
Offer recommendations to enhance water management practices in watershed schemes.
Supervise IP staff, NGOs, and private sector involvement in agroforestry, crop water, and watershed management activities, providing necessary training, instructions, and guidance as required.
Depending on project emergencies, the candidate may need to travel or relocate temporarily to other regions for assigned tasks.
Possess extensive knowledge of Crop Water Requirements.
Undertake other duties as assigned by line managers/supervisors.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Agriculture Engineering, or related fields.
At least three (3) years of professional experience in water resource management, irrigation engineering, agriculture, and watershed management/bioengineering with UN and NGOs.
Proficiency (level C) in English and local languages (Pashto and/or Dari).
