AWEC is a non-political, non-profit, women-led national organization that was established in 1991 by a group of educated Afghan women in exile. Their initial focus was to address the lack of facilities for Afghan refugees in Islamabad and later in Peshawar, Pakistan. Throughout its existence, AWEC has been actively engaged in advocacy and awareness-raising efforts to promote the rights of women and children, particularly those who often lack support systems. In recent years, one of AWEC's primary activities has been to mobilize Afghans at various levels, from local communities to political elites, aiming to reduce and ultimately eliminate violence against women.
The vision of AWEC is to create "an inclusive and just society with a sensitized and responsive public and private sector, where all women and children have access to opportunities for improving their quality of life, enabling them to realize their full potential."
